November 20, 2008 Hunt
I took Monkey to a central Fla WMA that allows deer dogs on Nov 20, 2008. I had hunted here a few times in the past couple of years, but hadn't been there in about a year. Turned Monkey out (he was the only dog I took) and walked through a block that is about 1/2 mile deep. Saw some old hog sign but it was very dry. Came out on a powerline, headed down the powerline for about 1/2 mile, then went back through the block towards the road the truck was on. I got back almost to the road and realized I hadn't seen Monkey in a while. I stopped to listen and could hear him baying way back behind me. I started back that way and 15-20 minutes later, as I got close, I could hear the hog running the dog. Monkey would bay then the hog would charge him and run through the palmettos after the dog. After getting Monkey wrecked this past summer, he has learned about which end has teeth! Asthe hog turned off and broke to run, Monkey would run in and grab his back end and stop him, then back up and bay. I was alone, and no other dogs, so I shot the hog with my .22. I didn't realize until after he was down that it was a barr hog, not a boar. 172 lbs and about 2" teeth. Course, now I am about 1/2 mile from the truck, by myself, with a hog down that weighs as much as I do!
